On 13 January 2026, students of Grade 9 from Indus Valley World School, one of the best CBSE school in Kolkata, accompanied by teachers, visited Fort William, Kolkata, on an educational excursion. The trip was organised to enhance students’ understanding of India’s historical and military heritage.
The visit began with the call of a bugle, after which teachers and students stood in silence to salute the eternal flame burning in memory of the nation’s martyrs. This solemn moment set a respectful tone for the tour. Fort William, built in 1696 by the British East India Company and named after King William III, played a crucial role during British rule and now serves as the headquarters of the Eastern Command of the Indian Army.
Students explored the fort’s octagonal structure, massive brick walls, arched windows, and well-maintained surroundings. They visited the war memorial honouring soldiers of the 1961, 1967, and 1971 wars and learned about buildings renamed to honour national leaders, such as Netaji Bhawan. The tour also included the historically significant cells where Mangal Pandey and later Subhas Chandra Bose were confined at different times.
The library and museum displayed rare books, original and captured weapons, flags, and war memorabilia. Overall, the visit was informative and inspiring, strengthening students’ respect for national history and the armed forces.
