IVWS Marks 212th Foundation Day of Indian Museum Kolkata with Inspiring Heritage Experience!
17/02/2026
The Indian Museum in Kolkata, founded on 2 February 1814 by the Asiatic Society of Bengal with Danish botanist Dr. Nathaniel Wallich as its first curator, is the oldest and one of the largest multipurpose museums in India and the Asia-Pacific region.
On 2 February 2026, the museum marked its 212th anniversary (foundation day) with special programmes and a unique exhibition titled “Beyond the Land: Markers of India’s Riverine and Maritime Heritage”, celebrating India’s deep civilizational ties with rivers and seas — unveiled as part of the commemorative events. The seminar highlighted the profound role that rivers, coasts and seas have played in shaping India’s cultural, economic and spiritual life over centuries, tracing how waterways facilitated communication, trade, and the spread of ideas and beliefs across regions. The event served as a tribute to India’s enduring connection with its waterways and underscored the museum’s ongoing mission of preserving and interpreting the country’s rich civilisational heritage.
For over two centuries, it has stood as a treasure trove of art, archaeology, anthropology, and natural history, continuing to educate and inspire visitors about India’s rich cultural and scientific heritage.
